Inspiration
DurhamCares takes its mission inspiration from the teachings of Jesus Christ who taught us to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind;” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27)
In the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:35-37), Jesus helps us understand a much broader definition of loving our neighbor than what we might first assume. Like the Good Samaritan we are to give generously and personally to all of those with whom we come into contact. The Samaritan crossed a social and political boundary to love an Israelite neighbor and in doing so he defied all social conventions and expanded the definition of neighbor for those around.
In Durham, our neighbors are next door, across town and across the world. We live in Walltown, Hope Valley, Northeast Central, Trinity Park, Few Gardens and every other city block in this great city that we call home. And more than that, our neighbors are people all across the world in places like India, Guatemala, Uganda and South Africa.
As an organization, DurhamCares affirms the statement of faith provided by the Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
