Durham YMCA In A Nutshell

What

“YMCA. We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities.”

To put Christian Principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Why

The YMCA was founded in 1844 as a way to keep men spiritually grounded in the industrial areas of London. In the 166 years since then, the YMCA has become one of the largest human services non-profits in the world. We have remained relevant because we continue to change and evolve to meet the needs of our community. Over the past 166 years, basketball, volleyball, resident camping, day camping, Father’s Day, swim lessons, the USO and other programs were all created by YMCAs to meet a growing need in a community. That same sense of community service and engagement still exists at the YMCA today.

Durham YMCA's Program

Aquatics

Aquatics programs consist of recreational swimming, swim lessons, swim teams, water aerobics and lap swimming.

Health & Wellness

Health & wellness programs consist of group fitness classes, personal training, and independent exercise through weight training and cardiovascular training.

Youth Programs

Youth programs cover a wide range of core programs - summer day camp, after school, youth sports and teen clubs.

In addition, the YMCA also offers programs specifically for youth in some of Durham’s most economically-challenged neighborhoods. The programs are served by our Outreach Department and consist of tutorial programs, summer day camp and Y-Life, a recreational program on Thursday nights.
