WhatThe Mission of Freedom House is to promote, enhance and support recovery for individuals with substance abuse, mental illness, and developmental disabilities.
Nearly 31,000 individuals experience the struggles of mental illness, developmental disabilities and the disease of addictions in Durham according to a 2008 Durham Center report. This population is predominately uninsured, unemployed and possibly homeless. Freedom House provides extensive services and support to these individuals and their families across the continuum of care. For over 35 years Freedom House has partnered with its clients to provide the tools necessary to live a life of recovery. That vision has not changed. Originally a detoxification facility, Freedom House has grown over the years to offer a full array of services. Over time, Freedom House developed a better understanding of the needs of the clients and what resources were necessary to give them the best chance of maintaining their recovery. In 2006, Freedom House acquired new facilities in Durham, NC, where its expertise and reputation provided The Durham Center a natural fit for its existing facility, the Durham Center Access. Since that time Freedom House has operated DCA, growing many of its programs and offering operational and clinical support.

Freedom House aims to respond to the needs of its participants by providing crisis stabilization, long and short term residential programs, social setting and non-hospital medical detoxification, halfway house programs, outpatient psychiatric services and intensive outpatient programs.
For more than 30 years the mission of Freedom House has been to help alcoholics, drug addicts and people with mental illnesses by providing the tools necessary to lead a life of recovery and to become productive members of the community. Freedom House is concerned with the emotional, physical, spiritual and social needs of those we serve. The members of Freedom House’s staff provide a therapeutic atmosphere in which growth and recovery become attainable goals.
Freedom House programs aim to provide:
• A structured, positive environment based on the 12-step recovery model, evidence based treatment / rehabilitation, and case management
• Appropriate available and accessible treatment to recovering addicts that will enable them to become productive members of society
• Support and stabilization treatment for people with mental illnesses to help them manage their illness and fulfill life goals
• Life skills programming to help strengthen each person in our program
• A response to community need for expanded services.
Patrice Eure HusseyExecutive Director
Patrice Eure Hussey is a leader in mental health services. For 17 years she has guided Freedom House Recovery Center’s efforts to meet the growing needs of central North Carolinians who suffer from mental illness, developmental disabilities and the disease of addictions. In her tenure Ms. Hussey has grown Freedom House from a small detox facility based and halfway house program in Orange County, NC with a budget of $350,000 and 46 staff members to an agency that offers a complete array of services for clients in 53 counties. She has overseen the completion of 3 major expansion projects, most recently finishing a state-of-the-art Crisis Unit housing 16 beds and 5 observation chairs in the summer of 2009. Today, Freedom House operates on a $10 million budget, employs nearly 250 members of our community and reaches over 9,000 individuals throughout central North Carolina.
In 2007, Ms. Hussey transitioned operations of Durham Center Access (DCA) from The Durham Center to Freedom House. This collaboration built upon Freedom House’s existing presence in Durham County and its organizational and clinical strengths. The 20 bedroom facility houses up to 27 clients and offers extensive outpatient services. DCA can assess clients psychiatrically and medically and triage clients for hospitalization, crisis stabilization, residential medical/social detoxification, and residential psychiatric medication stabilization, and refer clients to other outpatient services.
Ms. Hussey has served as visiting faculty at UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University, participated in numerous commissions and boards throughout North Carolina as an expert in the mental health field, and was recently elected to serve as President of the Alcohol Drug Council of NC. She also serves on a non-profit advisory group with NC Secretary of DHHS, Lanier Cansler.
Clinical Director
Heather Griffin-Dolciney came to Freedom House Recovery Center in the summer of 2007. With a Master’s Degree in Social Work and North Carolina licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Ms. Griffin-Dolciney oversees all aspects of clinical programming for clients at Freedom House. She maintains and enhances the continuum of services for clients and ensures the highest level of clinical care by proactively seeking and implementing best practices. Her background in mental health and research enables her to identify trends in Freedom House’s client base and adjust treatment accordingly.
Mrs. Griffin-Dolciney has implemented multiple new services and programs at Freedom House and oversaw a major clinical expansion of service with the additional of Durham Center Access and a new Crisis Unit in Chapel Hill. Her leadership helped secure CARF accreditation and Freedom House’s designation as a Critical Access Behavioral Health Agency.
